The Links Course

A championship-quality course reputed as one of the most celebrated and challenging courses in the Midwest. Since most holes on the Links were built as replicas of Scottish & English golf course holes, its layout strongly resembles courses played in the British Open. Under the direction of architect Ron Forse in 2000, the Links course had 150 trees removed as part of an architectural restoration plan; therefore, it is predominantly treeless. Wind comes into play due to green elevation and wide openness. This classical links tract is full of legends and tales. For example, legend has it that a boxcar was buried under the seventh green to form its huge green elevation. The Links Course took $250,000 to construct in 1930, almost an unheard of cost in those days.

It features gently rolling terrain; bent grass fairways; multi-tiered, unusually elevated, moderately fast greens that are surrounded by about 90 strategically placed steep bunkers; deep rough; large snaking sand traps

Architect

William B. Langford built the Links Course in 1930. Born in 1887 in Austin, Illinois, he suffered from polio as a child and took up golf as part of a rehabilitation program. He was a member of three Yale University NCAA championship golf teams from 1906-1908 and became a golf course architect after gaining a masters degree in mining engineering at Columbia University. He went on to design over 250 courses with his partner Theodore J. Moreau and became the first honorary member of the Golf Course Architectural Society of America. Langford owned and operated several daily-fee courses in the Chicago area and designed several courses in Wisconsin to include Leathem Smith Lodge Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay, North Shores Acres County Club in Kenosha, Our Country Club in Salem, Ozankee Country Club in Mequon, Spring Valley Country Club in Salem, and West Bend Country Club in West Bend. Langford, a strong promoter of golf, died in 1977 at the age of 89.
